What is a BBL
What is a BBL? Let’s try to understand, BBL (Brazilian butt lift) is a surgical procedure in which fat is transferred to your buttocks from your abdomen, hips, lower back, or thighs. The result is more like an hourglass with bigger buttocks.
A BBL can also make your waist smaller if the fat is in your abdomen or lower back. The fat is removed by liposuction. A cannula, a small plastic tube, removes fat during this cosmetic procedure.
What Does BBL Mean
According to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, the acronym BBL stands for “Brazilian Butt Lift.” a specialized fat transfer procedure that, without the use of implants, increases the size and shape of the buttocks.
They explain that liposuction is used to remove excess fat from the hips, lower back, thighs, or abdomen as part of this procedure. After that, some of the fat is injected into the buttocks.
The procedure is getting increasingly popular, and many people share before-and-after photos and videos of their BBL journeys on social media platforms like TikTok. Others talk about famous people (celebrities) and whether or not they’ve had a BBL procedure.
According to TikTok, the hashtag for BBL has received approximately six billion views, indicating a high level of interest in memes and documentation of the surgical procedure. Hundreds of common acronyms are used on TikTok, such as FYP, POV, and AS.

What is BBL Surgery
What is a BBL Surgery? Let’s make an effort to understand the BBL surgery procedure. An attractive, well-proportioned body is essential because of the shape and proportion of the buttocks. Using specialized fat transfer techniques, a skilled cosmetic surgeon can achieve a fuller, rounder buttock contour with the help of a Brazilian butt lift surgery procedure.
Without implants, a Brazilian butt lift is a specialized fat transfer procedure that increases the size and shape of the buttocks. Liposuction removes excess fat from the hips, abdomen, lower back, or thighs and is strategically injected into the buttocks.
A skilled and experienced cosmetic surgeon can improve the proportions of the entire lower body with the help of a Brazilian butt lift surgery procedure by assisting a patient in losing the stubborn fat from the most common areas, “the problem areas,” and enhance the buttocks, both of which have the long-lasting effects.
A Brazilian butt lift or buttock augmentation, also known scientifically as a Gluteoplasty, is a type of plastic surgery done to change the look of the buttocks.
Based on the patient’s anatomical status, surgical objective, and realistic expectations, the primary objective of BBL surgery is to provide the buttocks with the desired aesthetic shape, size, and volume through fat transfer or buttock implants. With BBL surgery, your buttocks look better and have a more hourglass shape.
You can get double benefits from the Brazilian butt lift surgery; first is the enhanced buttocks; second, if the fat is in the lower back or abdomen, they lose weight and slim down. As a result, the unwanted fat is extracted from specific body parts. It is then moved to the buttocks after the purification step.
There are three main steps involved in a Brazilian butt lift:
- Using a liposuction procedure, fat is removed from the abdomen, hips, lower back, thighs, and other areas.
- The process of purification and transfer of the extracted fat from other body parts.
- To increase the volume and shape of the buttock by injecting fat in a strategic way.
Surgery is often performed as an outpatient procedure by administrating general or intravenous sedation and local anesthesia.
An experienced cosmetic surgeon will consider this and may initially inject slightly more fat into the buttocks than is necessary to ensure that your final results most closely achieve your goals.

How much is a BBL
To understand how much is a BBL? You need to do some research. A Brazilian butt lift (BBL) can give you a backside that looks fuller and more round. For a BBL, a surgeon typically charges between $4,000 and $5,000. However, depending on your geographic location and many other factors, the final cost could be double that amount.
A BBL is typically not covered by health insurance because it is considered a cosmetic procedure. Try to find a board-certified, experienced plastic surgeon and inquire about the costs before proceeding.
A Brazilian butt lift (BBL) procedure is probably something you’ve considered if you want a rounder, curvier back.
Nowadays, it’s hard to avoid many people posting their BBL results on social media. A BBL is a costly procedure that can also be risky if you don’t take the necessary precautions.
In 2020, the average BBL surgeon’s fee was approximately $4,800, according to ASPS data.
However, the following factors will affect the total cost of the procedure:
- The geographical location that you are planning for the surgery.
- The costs of the hospital or facility.
- Anaesthesia doctor fees and its costs.
- Prescription medications
- The BBL pillow, which relieves pressure on your buttocks while you recover
- Lymphatic massage, if your surgeon suggests it.
A BBL, for example, can cost anywhere from $2,500 to $10,000 in Miami, with an average price of just over $6,500.
The same procedure in Atlanta generally costs between $6,500 and $10,000.
You may have to pay $8,000 and $10,000 for a BBL procedure in Long Island, New York, and $14,000 and $24,000 in Los Angeles.

Why is BBL so Dangerous
To understand why is BBL so dangerous? I thought I’d try to explain some of the science behind the headlines since Brazilian Butt Lift surgery, also known as fat grafting to the buttocks, has been in the news once more. BBL has the highest mortality rate compared to other cosmetic procedures.
According to estimates, 1 in every 3,000 to 5,000 procedures is performed. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons decided its members should not perform the procedure.
All of this concerns the inferior gluteal vein (IGV), an anatomical structure. It is a large vein in the buttocks where BBL work is done. In every post-mortem of BBL death victims, fat has been found injected into this vein resulting in a typical fatal fat embolism.
Is it, therefore, a risky procedure just because of that vein? First and foremost, the IGV differs slightly from other body veins. IGV is a fat, floppy vein, and it is fixed in contrast to other veins, which can move out of the way when you approach them.
IGV is fixed in place, passing under a structure of your pelvis known as the greater sciatic notch. This indicates that surgeons cannot avoid it while doing the BBL procedure.
The more concerning fact is that when surgeons perform fat grafting, they may tear IVG without actually puncturing it. It gets torn simply because of vigorous wobbling of the bottom. Therefore, the IGV can be torn without being punctured.
Like those of other veins, the vein’s valves only allow blood to flow in one direction, so when the surrounding muscles compress the vein, blood moves toward the heart. A negative pressure (or suction) effect is created by this one-directional movement, allowing fat or anything else to be sucked into the vein’s vicinity through the tear.
Therefore, we have a structure that can be torn during the BBL procedure without the surgeon’s knowledge, and this raptured vein can suck fat from the surrounding areas.
The surgeon could not believe that they had grafted fat below the muscle found in every post-mortem. They believed that they were grafting fat always in or above the muscle.
Therefore, if the IGV had ruptured and suctioned fat from another location, and if that is the case, then this problem could happen to anyone; even if a good technique is used, it could be a hazardous procedure.
A UK Task Force has researched the safety of BBL, determining whether it can be performed safely at all, and measures will be taken to prevent the tragic deaths that have already occurred and even occur again. It should be suspended for the time being until finding a viable solution.
The only negative result is that some patients are now traveling overseas for this surgery, which is not good news.
How to find a cosmetic surgeon for BBL?
Brazilian butt lift surgery is a complicated procedure requiring extensive training and experience in fat transfer techniques and a highly developed eye for aesthetic detail.
Before choosing a Brazilian butt lift surgeon, do some research because not all cosmetic surgeons receive this specialized training during their residency training.
You can get a sense of the aesthetic style of each potential cosmetic surgeon by asking them how many Brazilian butt lift procedures they have performed. You should also look at the before and after photos of the patients on whom the surgeon had performed the procedure. Learn how to select the best cosmetic surgeon.
The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery performs surgery in an accredited surgical facility and has formal training and experience in cosmetic surgery.
A provider’s credentials and experience are essential when selecting the right surgeon.
Most providers provide consultations where you can inquire about their education and board certifications. Additionally, they ought to have a picture portfolio that includes examples of their work.
In this case, it’s critical to rely on your instincts. Providers may only be legitimate surgeons if they appear eager to perform the procedure at a very low cost.
Start your search at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery if you need help locating a provider.
Am I a good candidate for a Brazilian butt lift?
If you want to change the shape and size of your buttocks, a Brazilian butt lift can be a great option. However, some patients are better suited for the procedure, and it is essential to have realistic expectations regarding the surgery, recovery, and outcomes. If you agree with the following, you are probably a good candidate for a Brazilian butt lift:
- If you want a buttock augmentation without any implants.
- You have a healthy skin tone in your hips and buttocks.
- You have enough fat stores in other areas to harvest for injection into your buttocks.
- If you are willing, you can avoid sitting directly on your buttocks for several weeks.
A Brazilian butt lift, despite its name, is not a traditional “lifting” procedure because it does not tighten loose skin in the buttocks. Thigh and buttock lift surgery might be a better option if you are bothered by sagging skin on your thighs or buttocks.
